Picture a Professor Summer Book Group

Join ITL and your colleagues this summer to discuss a collection of essays written by and for instructors in Higher Education. ITL will provide all participants the book (Picture a Professor - edited by Jessamyn Neuhaus).

If you've been nervous to join a book group before because you don't have time to read the whole, this summer group is perfect. You'll only need to read 1 essay per topic (you can obviously read them all) for each book group session. You can also drop in to only the sessions you are interested in. Attend sessions virtually via Webex or in-person in Jones Hall 3049.

Here is the summer schedule:

Using Social Annotation for Course Readings (it's AI-resistant)

Join Dr. Rachel Faerber-Ovaska for the next session in ITL's Generative AI: Professional Learning Community. Whether you joined us for the three session this Spring, or this will be your first --- we hope you will join us virtually to learn how to use social annotation for readings in your courses. The session will cover the following:

  • What is social annotation, and why use it?
  • An overview of available social annotation tools
  • Testing out 2-3 new tools together as a group
  • Brainstorming ways to use social annotation in your courses

Whether you joined us for the previous sessions, or this will be your first --- we hope you will join us virtually to learn fresh ideas for assessing learning in the age of age of AI. The session will cover the following:

  • Decide how much AI use is okay in your classes
  • Understand the extent to which your current assessments are vulnerable to AI-completion
  • See examples of ways other faculty have adapted
  • Redesign a test or assignment, or try a whole new type of assignment
