They also distributed water bottles alongside Poppi to promote hydration and wellness among students. The chapter hosted a hazing awareness and prevention event to educate students on safe practices and foster a positive campus culture.

Through authentic performances of traditional and contemporary Bollywood and Odissi dance, music, and rituals, the event educated attendees about the depth, history, and storytelling of South Asian arts. The event also encouraged cross-cultural dialogue, engaging domestic and international students in shared experiences that fostered empathy, appreciation, and inclusivity.

The Nova Award

The Nova Award recognizes a newly registered student organization exhibiting initiative in organizational development and strong potential to contribute to the quality of life as a recognized student organization at Youngstown State University.

This organization deserves the Nova Award because it has gone beyond simply hosting events and has actively shaped a supportive and engaging community on campus. In its first year, it created intentional spaces for students to form connections, whether through mentoring new members, casual hangouts, or interactive social events. Students don't have to be psychology majors to join, as it is open to anyone. By balancing fun activities with opportunities for academic and career exploration, the organization has appealed to a wide range of students and encouraged involvement from those who might not otherwise join a club.

Libra Award

The Libra Award is presented to an outstanding faculty or staff member who has made a significant impact on the student organization or organizations which they advise.

Dan Wakefield

“Professor Wakefield has greatly contributed to the growth of Future Teachers Club. In his classes, he promotes the club to his students by relating information about the club and upcoming meetings or events. Additionally, he informs other professors about the club and its meeting days/times, so they can notify their students about the club. One of the most important developments for the club is all because of Professor Wakefield. At the end of the Fall 2025 semester, he had the idea for FTC to become affiliated with the Ohio Education Association, which would be of great benefit to our members. He undertook considerable work contacting the association and collecting the necessary information to facilitate this. By FTC becoming a chapter of the OEA, each member can obtain $1 million in insurance for student teaching, become eligible for scholarships, discounts, and many other advantages. It is a great opportunity for YSU students, and it is all because of Professor Wakefield.” – Nominator, Sabrina Gatts.

Mentor of the Year

This award is for a Faculty/Staff Member Who has Contributed the Most to the Development of a YSU Student.

“Tiffany Moore has truly been an angel in disguise during my time at Youngstown State University. Her willingness to be present, supportive, and deeply invested in student success goes far beyond what is expected of a faculty or staff mentor. Whenever our organization faced uncertainty, pressure, or last-minute challenges, she consistently showed up with calm guidance and genuine care. One of the most powerful examples of her impact was during the planning of our International Student Organization Prom and International Festival. When we encountered unexpected SGA funding hurdles at the very last minute, Tiffany did not step back—she stepped in. She personally helped us select décor, assisted with ordering essential pieces, and worked alongside us to visualize the event from scratch under extreme time pressure. Her hands-on involvement transformed what could have been a stressful and disappointing situation into a successful, meaningful event for hundreds of students.” – Nominator, Manav Desai.

Within the fraternity and sorority community, she has also become a highly respected leader. Her work organizing Delta Zeta’s “Hits for Hearing” philanthropy event raised thousands of dollars for the Starkey Hearing Foundation and demonstrated her ability to plan large scale initiatives with purpose, precision, and heart. This January, she was elected Chapter President, a role in which I am confident she will continue to elevate and strengthen the organization.”

Nicholas DuBos, International Student and Scholar Advisor in the International Programs Office stated, “Manav is dedicated to breaking down barriers and creating an environment where diversity, unity, and inclusivity are more than just words, but the very essence of our campus. He contributes his time and skills to numerous cultural events and aims to create meaningful experiences that resonate with students from various backgrounds. She is intentional about making sure every member feels welcomed, valued, and included in our organization. She shows up ready to serve others and is thoughtful in considering the needs of those around her. She also is confident in engaging with new people and building relationships. When you talk to Shalom for the first time, she has a way of making it feel like you have been friends for years. She is open for new challenges and to try new things. Along with this, Shalom is teachable by being open to feedback and has an eagerness to grow in many areas of her life.”

He’s always willing to step up and help wherever he’s needed. If someone needs a tutoring session covered or extra support, Justin is usually the first to volunteer. He’s reliable, approachable, and genuinely cares about the campus community. In his leadership roles, he takes initiative and follows through, and as a tutor he’s patient and supportive with other students. Overall, Justin consistently shows up, puts in the work, and makes a positive impact in the organizations and programs he’s part of.

RosaMaria Vega, Administrative Specialist 2 in Humanities and Social Sciences shared, “Nicolas is truly unique in his ability to empathize, establish rapport and reach a very broad range of students from diverse backgrounds. Peers have purposefully sought him out because he had been helpful to them, much like a good professional counselor does. I have rarely seen a peer cultivate these types of relationships with other students during my twenty-five years of professional experience. He is a good listener who also can convey information clearly and effectively to individuals and groups.”

Multicultural Leadership Award

Dalton Korda, Associate Director in Campus Recreation shared, “Shantel has very good communication skills. She is a friendly face who is ready to help our patrons at Campus Rec through their membership issues. She puts the Rec Center first while she is there and makes sure to complete her work. Her engaging personality and energy connect her with our diverse clientele, making her one of the best employees during my eighteen years supervising at the Writing Center. Given that she will graduate in May, I want her to know the indelible mark that she has left on the Writing Center and YSU. Eden is an exemplary peer writing consultant with whom I have entrusted many additional tasks, including preparing files for the English Placement Tests and serving at most resource fairs. Eden has delivered in-class Writing Center orientations, an easy transition given her years of competing and coaching speech and debate.” – Nominator, Angela Messenger, Coordinator, YSU Writing Center.

“Connor was hired straight into two supervisory positions this year and has hit the ground running. In his Intramural position, he learned enough in less than a semester to be able to assist in staff training, oversee entire days of competitions on his own, and has officiated every sport that we offer. Connor also helped recruit new Intramural Sports Officials when we were short staffed due to the unexpected departures of many student officials. He is undoubtedly a large part of the success of our Intramural Sports programs this year and has exceeded even the high expectations that I had for him at the beginning of the year.” – Nominator, Josiah Horst, Coordinator of Competitive Sports and Recreational Youth Programs for Campus Recreation

His nominator Carrie Anderson shared, “Anthony is one of those behind-the-scenes people who truly makes a difference for our students, even though most will never know his name. He works outside the Division of Student Affairs, but he consistently shows an incredible level of commitment to helping us create better, more accessible experiences for students. Anthony is the person you can always count on—quick to respond, willing to brainstorm, and never hesitant to jump in, even when a deadline is tight. He’s recently assisted us with an overhaul of our divisional website, producing a cleaner, more user-friendly layout and setting up a website dedicated to sharing our services with students at YSU-Steubenville. When a Presidential Mentor mentioned that the Penguin Portal didn’t have any information about dining, Anthony immediately helped map out a plan. Within hours, he created an “All About Dining” tile that was clean, engaging, and easy for students to use. His dedication, creativity, and reliability directly support the student experience in ways many people will never see, but that matter every single day.”

Tony’s work goes far beyond the expectations of his role, particularly in his dedicated support of student-athletes who often face academic, athletic, and personal pressures simultaneously. He has built trusting relationships that allow students to feel safe opening up about deeply personal challenges. Tony has repeatedly served as a critical bridge between student-athletes and the Dean of Students Office, ensuring that students are connected to appropriate university and community resources, especially in moments of crisis when urgent action is needed. Nominator Emily Loudon, Assistant Dean of Students, says of Tony, “Through his advocacy, responsiveness, and humanity, Tony exemplifies what it means to serve students at YSU. His work has not only supported individual students during vulnerable moments but has strengthened the overall culture and connection to the Division of Student Affairs, Dean of Students Office and care within the university community.”

She helps us do things in a smarter, more efficient way, and we all benefit from her hard work. Carrie is deeply committed to YSU – our students, and her colleagues, and I'm thrilled to be presenting her the Gillespie-Painter Award tonight.

Ryan is the colleague who never hesitates to ask, “Where can I help?”—and he follows through every time. His reliability, enthusiasm, and genuine care for students and staff make him an invaluable asset to our Division. He also adds much needed humor to our days, with dad jokes that occasionally hit the mark—and sometimes don’t... Ryan has taken the lead in a variety of projects outside of his role in Campus Recreation, including the Greek Life Audit in Spring 2025 and the Student Affairs Data Mining Project this academic year. In addition, Ryan has supported growth and collaboration within the Division by partnering with Housing and Residence Life on the development of a new learning community. What makes this especially meaningful is that Ryan championed and empowered a staff member’s vision—Carmel’s passion for creating this community—and helped bring that vision to reality. His willingness to open doors, offer support, and remove barriers reflects his commitment not only to students, but also to fostering professional growth and innovation among staff.

McDonald Cultural Awareness Award recognizes outstanding individuals who have made a lasting contribution to encouraging and increasing awareness of cultural diversity at Youngstown State University. The IPO is currently without a director -- but thanks to Joe, they still have a leader. At an administrative level, he provides key information to help campus leaders understand the national climate around international students, visa processes, and other big picture concerns. And while helping us understand this macro level of international strategy, Joe also leads the way on the micro level, guiding efforts to support each individual student in their transition to life at YSU and their educational experience as Penguins. Nominator Erin Driscoll shared, “I’m continually impressed by Joe’s thoughtful demeanor, genuine concern for the well-being of students, and patience with others who may not have the same insight into the international experience as he does. He simultaneously demonstrates kindness and accountability, helping students and administrators navigate challenging situations. His understanding of cultural nuances around financial management, mental health concerns, and political unrest helps his colleagues gain a deeper understanding of the perspective of international students studying on our campus.” And this helps all of us better support our students.

The YSU Pin Award

Bokan_Brooklyn.jpg

Legacy Statement:
As a YSU graduate, she wants her legacy to reflect visibility, hard work, and service. As a Black woman on campus, she learned to lead with confidence and purpose, showing others, they belong and can succeed. She hopes to be remembered as someone who balanced academics, leadership, and community engagement while always showing up and following through.

Economus_Grace.jpg

Legacy Statement:
The legacy she hopes to leave at YSU is being someone who showed up, took chances, and made the most out of every opportunity. She wants people to remember her as someone who spoke up, stood up for others, and wasn’t afraid to try new things even when she wasn’t sure how they would turn out. A lot of her growth came from stepping outside of her comfort zone, and she hopes that inspires other students to do the same.

Oswald_Alysa.jpeg

Legacy Statement:

The legacy she will leave as a YSU graduate will be something that only one student gets to leave behind per year, that of SGA President. This position has given her a unique perspective on college, this campus, and all the students, faculty, and staff that are here. She is so grateful to have been able to lead the charge of representing the students in this interesting time in YSU's history, including helping students navigate the challenges presented by the renovation of our student union. Finding ways to work around this barrier, finding spaces to gather and connect has been something that she was able to overcome quickly, and try her best to make campus a space that feels like home to the student body. She also wanted to leave her mark on the faculty and staff, ensuring that she attended and spoke up for the student's interest at as many events possible.

Pintar_Jordan.jpg

Legacy Statement:
She hopes to leave a legacy of genuine passion. She believes that whatever you choose to do, whether in sports, academics, service, or your career, the difference between going through the motions and making a real impact is how deeply you care. When you truly love what you are building, even the hard days feel worth it. Passion changes how you show up. It makes you persistent, creative, and willing to push through discomfort. Through Students for Sight and Clear Eyes on Campus, she hopes she leaves behind more than programs. She hopes to leave an example that you do not have to wait to make a change; you can start now, even before you feel ready.

Sienna_Summers.jpg

Legacy Statement:
She hopes the legacy she leaves is one of genuine investment, that she was someone who showed up fully and made things better because of it. Within Greek Life, she hopes she leaves behind stronger systems, a more connected Panhellenic community, and sisters who felt supported during their own leadership journeys. In the broader campus community, she hopes students remember that service matters, that the hours we put in and the items we donate come from choosing to act on your values.
