Be a part of the WCBA community by being an active member of a student organization. You will build professional networks, work with the local and regional business community, develop leadership skills, and learn more about your future career while making friendships

Most WCBA student organizations and honor societies are student chapters of national industry organizations, and many provide the opportunity to travel to conferences, competitions, business visits, and build a network of professional contacts. With 7 professional organizations and 3 national honor societies to choose from, your passion will find a home here.

 

Student Organizations

 

American Marketing Association (Ama)

The American Marketing Association is one of the largest professional associations for marketers. The YSU student chapter is involved with a broad range of activities, including attending the annual collegiate conference hosted by the American Marketing Association in New Orleans.

Club Activities:

  • Networking with successful business professionals

  • Hosting campus-wide events, such as YSU’s Got Talent

ECONOMICS CLUB

The YSU Economics Club welcomes students of any major who are interested in exploring economic issues through roundtable discussions with faculty and experts. Learn about careers in economics through guest speaker events and engage in the community with service-oriented activities. The Economics Club partners with Omicron Delta Epsilon, the International Honor Society in Economics, to honor outstanding students at the annual banquet.

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS (IMA)

The Institute of Management Accountants is the world’s largest association of management accountants and financial managers. The WCBA chapter hosts guest speakers and engages in volunteer activities as well as attends various regional and national conferences. All students are welcome to participate.

Club Activities:

  • Host guest speakers and visit local companies
  • Manage the Mentoring Aspiring Professionals (MAP) program
  • Identify useful resources and help students set professional goals

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS ORGANIZATION (IBO)

The International Business Organization (IBO) at YSU is open to all current students and helps students learn about International Business and provides opportunities and resources regarding the global business landscape. IBO strives to promote a greater understanding of international business and global issues through speakers, social events, site visits, competitions, and volunteer opportunities.

Club Activities:

  • Host guest speakers, visit sites, and volunteer
  • Compete in NASBITE Case Competition
  • Organize social events

Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM)

The WCBA student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) supports students in the SHRM-certified human resource curriculum by providing leadership and professional development opportunities. It is open to all undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in HR, regardless of major.

Club Activities:

  • Professional network building events
  • Specialized development workshops
  • Member of national SHRM
  • Attend conferences and compete in case competitions
  • Work towards an HR merit cord for graduation

STUDENT INVESTMENT FUND (SIF)

Members of the Student Investment Fund manage a stock portfolio with a value currently near $2.4 million. They also learn from regional investing professionals during their weekly meetings in the Financial Services Lab. SIF is open to all YSU students interested in
learning about investing.

STUDENT NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP ORGANIZATION (SNLO)

This student group is for those interested in making a difference in the community. SNLO provides professional nonprofit management experiences through site visits and presentations from local organizations, as well as an opportunity to participate in regional consulting projects. Members also implement fund-raising events to sustain the “Pay It Forward” Initiative where grant funding is awarded to local nonprofit organizations each year. Group community service projects are also planned. Academic credit is available for participation as meetings are held in conjunction with the Nonprofit Community Services course. Those students seeking the Nonprofit Leadership minor and/or certificate are encouraged to be active participants in the organization. Membership is open to students of all majors.

Honor Societies

 

BETA ALPHA PSI (BAP)

Beta Alpha Psi is an international honors society for accounting, finance and information systems students and professionals that strives to expose students to all aspects of the professions via speakers, technical meetings, visits to firms and companies, an annual banquet and attendance at regional and national conferences. BAP members also present relevant topics to university and community audiences.

  • Host speakers related to accounting, finance and information systems

  • Attend regional & international conferences

BETA GAMMA SIGMA (BGS)

Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive.  Only schools accredited by AACSB International, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (approximately 5%) are eligible to have a chapter.  Each year, students in the top 10 percent of the sophomore, junior, or senior classes or the top 20 percent of the graduating master’s class are invited to join this organization.

Club Activities:

  • Host a Business Case Competition once a year
  • Attend national conference
  • Promote best practice is the field of business

Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE)

Omicron Delta Epsilon is the International Honor Society for Economics and one of the world's largest academic honor societies. The YSU chapter recognizes scholastic attainment and outstanding achievement in economics, providing official recognition for high-performing undergraduate and graduate students. ODE promotes closer ties between students and faculty, encourages academic research, and sponsors educational programming in partnership with the YSU Economics Club.
