YSU staff member earns recognition at international performing arts competition

Gunnar Carwile with his medals from the International Model and Talent Association’s annual summer competition

Gunnar Carwile, coordinator of Theatrical Production and Facilities Support in the Dana School of Music and University Theatre at Youngstown State University, recently brought home top honors from the International Model and Talent Association’s annual summer competition in New York City.

Carwile, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from YSU, works behind the scenes supporting theatre productions and music performances for the Dana School of Music and University Theatre. He competed in six acting categories during the weeklong event July 7-11, including cold reading, theatrical headshot, improv commercial performance, screen test and monologue. The competition drew hundreds of performers from across the world in acting, singing, dancing, modeling and other art disciplines.

At the awards ceremony, Carwile received four medals in his division and placed fifth overall in the Male Actor of the Year category, which featured more than 60 competitors in the 21-and-older age group – the largest category at the event.

“It felt surreal to stand among so many talented people and be recognized for my work,” Carwile said. “I never really saw myself as someone who could stand out in that way, but this experience showed me that I can push boundaries and achieve something meaningful.”

Carwile trained for nearly a year leading up to the competition with Star Bound Talent of Toledo, Ohio, traveling regularly to prepare for the performances. In addition to his accomplishments, he continues to support YSU’s Cliffe College of Creative Arts and the performing arts community by coordinating facilities and production for concerts, rehearsals and theatre production.

“My advice to YSU students is to trust what you’re learning here—it matters. The techniques and guidance from your professors will take you far, but just as important is supporting each other, stepping out of your comfort zone, and being willing to take risks. That’s how you grow, both as an artist and as a person.”

Carwile’s achievements highlight the caliber of talent within YSU’s Cliffe College of Creative Arts and serve as an example of how skills developed on campus can lead to success in your careers.
