The Youngstown State University Department of Art will host the Red Press Collaborative featuring acclaimed printmaker, educator and innovator Lari Gibbons.
The weeklong event will take place Monday, March 9, through Friday, March 13, with daily collaborative printing sessions held in Bliss Hall, Room 4025.
Now a beloved annual tradition at YSU, the Red Press Collaborative invites a celebrated printmaker to campus for one week to work alongside Department of Art students in the creation of a limited-edition collaborative print. The resulting work is signed, numbered and fully documented and made available to supporters through a $125 donation, with all contributions directed toward the printmaking program’s study abroad initiatives, student conference travel, equipment and the annual collaboration itself.
Gibbons is a professor of art at the University of North Texas, where she teaches printmaking and spent a decade directing PRINT Press, the university’s professional fine art collaborative print workshop. Her practice bridges traditional and innovative approaches, combining analog craft with digital tools such as laser cutters and CNC routers to create woodblocks, plates and matrices printed by hand.
Her work has been published in major texts on contemporary printmaking, and her prints are held in collections nationwide. She has held residencies at the Banff Centre, Penland School of Craft, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, and Ucross Foundation and has led workshops at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the Amon Carter Museum of Art, among others.
In addition to the studio sessions, Gibbons will deliver a public lecture as part of the YSU Department of Art Lecture Series on the opening day of the residency. The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place at the John J. McDonough Museum of Art on the YSU campus.
