Housing and Dining/Meal Plan Accommodations

Youngstown State University provides housing and dining accommodations for students with documented disabilities, medical conditions, or psychological disabilities on an individualized, case-by-case basis.

Students seeking housing or dining accommodations should register with the Accessibility Services Office, as early as possible to allow time for review and implementation.

Housing Accommodations

Students interested in living on campus can learn more about the housing application process through YSU Housing & Residence Life .

If you need a housing accommodation related to a disability or medical condition, you must complete the accommodation process through the Office of Accessibility Services.

How to Request a Housing Accommodation

Step 1: Submit Documentation

Provide one of the following:

  • A completed Documentation Form for Qualified Professionals, or
  • An official letter from your healthcare provider on professional letterhead that includes:
    • Length of the treatment relationship
    • Diagnosis or medical condition
    • Recommended accommodation
    • Explanation of why the accommodation is medically necessary

Step 2: Complete the Accessibility Services Registration Form

Submit the online registration form to begin the accommodation process.

Step 3: Meet with Accessibility Services

Once your documentation and registration form have been received, Accessibility Services will contact you regarding next steps.

Important Housing Deadlines

To ensure accommodations can be reviewed and implemented:

  • June 30: Recommended deadline for housing accommodation requests that may impact room assignments for the upcoming academic year.
  • At least 6 weeks before move-in: Recommended timeline for accommodation requests submitted outside of the regular housing assignment process.

Students are strongly encouraged to begin the process before their first semester whenever possible.

Common Housing Accommodations

Examples of housing accommodations may include:

  • Medical Single Rooms
  • Assistive Alerting Devices
  • Wheelchair-Accessible Housing
  • Emotional Support Animals (ESAs)

Medical Single Rooms

Medical single rooms are a limited housing resource and are approved only when documentation clearly demonstrates that a private room is necessary to address a disability-related barrier.

Approval is based on:

  • Disability-related need
  • Supporting documentation
  • Available housing inventory

Students requesting a medical single room should submit all required materials by June 30 whenever possible.

Emotional Support Animals (Esas)

Emotional Support Animals and other assistance animals may be approved in YSU residence halls and the University Courtyard Apartments through the accommodation process.

Students requesting an ESA should complete the housing accommodation process through Accessibility Services and review the information available on the Service Animal and ESA page webpage.

Important Information

  • ESAs are generally permitted only in the student's assigned residential space.
  • ESAs are not typically permitted in academic buildings, dining facilities, or other campus locations where service animals may be allowed.
  • Emotional Support Animals are different from service animals and are subject to different legal requirements.
  • Students approved for an ESA must comply with the Assistance Animal Housing Agreement and all university policies.

Failure to comply with university animal policies may result in Student Code of Conduct action.

Dining & Meal Plan Accommodations

Many students with food allergies, sensitivities, or medical dietary needs find that YSU’s official campus dining service provider, AVI Fresh, already offers options that meet their needs.

Examples include accommodations for:

  • Food allergies
  • Gluten sensitivities
  • Celiac disease
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Other medically related dietary needs

Before requesting a formal accommodation, students are encouraged to:

  1. Review available dining and allergen information provided by YSU’s dining service provider, AVI Fresh.
  2. Meet with a member of the AVI Fresh dining team to discuss available options.
  3. Explore existing menu options and dietary resources.

Students seeking dietary accommodations for religious, cultural, or personal preferences should contact AVI Fresh directly to discuss available options.

How to Request a Dining Accommodation

If your disability-related dietary needs cannot be met through existing dining options, you may request a formal accommodation through Accessibility Services.

  • An official letter from your healthcare provider on professional letterhead that includes:
    • Length of the treatment relationship
    • Diagnosis or medical condition
    • Recommended accommodation
    • Explanation of medical necessity
